Great Long Bike Ride
For people who love to ride their bike there’s nothing better than having excellent bike trails practically right outside your door. Luckily for us this is what we have in Hamilton, Ontario. Great bike trails and biking is one of the things Hamilton really has going for it, trails literally minutes from downtown some of which will take you right out of town often without tricky crossings of busy streets.
As Autumn approached last year we were trying to get in as many family bike rides as we could, especially since we finally got the trailer we needed for our 3 year old a little late in the season. We picked up a used child bike trailer one day, fixed it up a bit. It worked great and it was safe enough but it was still used and fairly beat up looking. So I couldn’t believe it when it got stolen one day off the back porch. I cried. I really love riding my bike and it is soooo much fun when we get to do it all together. I also figured it would be a lot more expensive to get a brand new one than it turned out to be. So we got a Via Velo and so far so good.
Hamilton to Brantford Trail
The rail trail from Hamilton to Brantford is prettty good. There are some streets and country roads to cross along the way but it’s pretty straightforward. There’s some shade through forested areas and there’s also open fields. It continues to Paris and Cambridge. We rode to Brantford and back, about 80 km. Took about 6 hours.
Some essentials for the toddler that we always bring on a family bike ride include,
Dates for snacking. They keep well from one bike ride to the next as well and they’re super healthy.
Other snacks like nuts, crackers and cheese, cut up fruit, other treats
Change of clothes for the toddler
Jacket or sweatshirt in case of cold
Small blanket in case of cold. Fleece works well.
One or two books to look at in the trailer, books that will stand up to a little wear and tear if need be
A small toy to look at. Sophia has a play phone that lights up with numbers and talks to her etc. – pretty handy for the trailer.
